Guillermo Habacuc Vargas admits on his new created MySpace page, that he indeed killed the dog!

--> [26.10.07] Update here (the poor dog died, there is no doubt anymore): http://reiskeks-natividad.blogspot.com/...faster-and.html

Here is a part of his original [most recent] statement:

"Hello everyone. My name is Guillermo Habacuc Vargas. I am 50 years old [Remark: The "artist" is in fact about 30 years old, more real data about him over here] and an artist. Recently, I have been criticized for my work titled "Eres lo que lees", which features a dog named Nativity. (...) [I deleted here the further blah of the "artist".] (...) Nativity was a very sick creature and would have died in the streets anyway."

So there is just this to say:

  • We see, that not only the gallery was lying from the beginning, but also, what we have to think about all statements of this "artist".
  • We see how he is changing his statement, depending on how the public reactions are - first statement was "the dog would have died anyway" - second statement was "I cannot say if the dog died or not" - third statement was "I wanted to do it to remember Mr.Natividad Canda" [the burglar killed by guard dogs] - fourth statement was "I did the exhibition to show the terrible situation of street dogs".... etc...
  • The next statement will be obviously "Santa Claus and Ronald McDonald jumped into the exhibition and took the dog" or something like that?!

[March 2008] - About the comment moderation (deleted comments)

Dear visitors of "Remember Natividad",

since this seems to be the most visited post in this blog, I add the remark also here:

As mentioned before, we can clearly understand that many of you are furious or saddened by the happenings, nevertheless we will still proceed to delete any kind of rude insults and also all encouragements to kill or torture Guillermo Vargas (in all languages - Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, no matter, if we can translate it and it contains only hatred and lynch mob like encouragements, we will delete it, if we cannot translate it due to impossible language, we will delete the comment too).

Please note: I am not a native Spanish speaker, nor any of the people helping me here, thus we will delete any messages containing slang we cannot translate via Babelfish or other common online dictionaries, since we cannot sort out what the entire meaning of the comment would be in the end.

Of course we delete in generally any kind of SPAM comments.

This blog is to support humanity and animal rights and not to increase the amount of violence in the world, we have already enough of it everywhere.

Additionally, I have to remark that all comments are moderated, this means, when you write a comment it will NOT appear immediately below the post. All comments are checked first, and EVERY comment is translated, no matter in which language it was posted.

Please turn you anger and sadness into constructive action - support this boycott, inform other people. Start a page on your own. Join animal welfare organizations like The Humane Society or Peta (for the native Spanish speakers: there is Peta en Espanol), or start a movement on your own or donate for charity.

To those, who find there is "too much" support for animals - please support or donate to Amnesty International or the SOS Children's Villages. There is support for all living beings needed!

Further thoughts from Judymac's OH.

I accept that feral dogs and cats can be a problem.

I don't doubt that many of these animals die of neglect.

In my view there are three acceptable ways of handling the situation of feral animals.

First, and most usual, ignore the animals leaving them to fend for themselves. They may contribute to the community by killing some of the even more nasty rodent population.

Second, humane elimination of the most dangerous or sick animals.

Third and most expensive, arrange for the animals to be adopted by someone who takes responsibility of feeding and managing the animal.

Picking one out and then leaving it to die in an art gallery is not a reasonable approach!

Even if you accept his justification, I still struggle to reconcile this exhibit with any reasonable definition of ART. Where is the creativity of the artist?

If we hark back to his earlier statement about the dogs who killed the burglar, I also feel this is a complete nonsense. No reasonable person can make an example of an innocent member of a species blaming them for something one (or two) other individual members of the species did - especially given that the dogs in question had been bred and trained by humans to do just what they did!

I have started an online fundraising page so that we can turn our anger & outrage into something positive.

I am in the process of finding a suitable European online page to do the same. I have reposted this link on all my pages about Natividad.

This guy sucks. What he did was so hateful. There's a difference between a stray dog who may die on the streets and a dog chained up in a gallery, with no access to even a drop of water! This is torture, pure and simple. Thinking of poor Natividad makes me sick. What kind of a world do we live in?

Paul in the US said...

For starters, I still can't understand why you're trying to honor a thief? Someone who illegally breaks and enters into a persons house or property is not to be honored. This piece of shit got what he deserved; many people have dogs not only for their excellent companionship, but also for the protection they provide from such trash. Yet another example of why dogs are man's best friend; they keep the scum of our race in check.
And that scum includes you. Yes, that dog would've probably died in the street. Well, probably is a pretty big word. I'm in the military, and there's always a chance I could die in battle. But there's a difference between allowing me to perish with at least a minimal amount of control of my fate, as opposed to tying me up and watching me die. A wolf will often walk in the woods away from it's pack to die, and I am positive that this dog could not die the way its insticts told it to.
And if you're so concerned about the the situation of stray dogs in your country, why don't you do something useful about it? How about you spend some money that you're using on this website and put it towards an animal protection group? Why don't you push your so called countrymen to feed these dogs, have them neutered or spayed, and attempt to control the population through humane means?
I have to be frank: I'm surprised that you have not been targeted or threaten by the more extreme animal rights groups. In my opinion, a person who tortures an animal for their own pleasure of personal gain is usually mentally ill. Often serial killers, child molestors, and other derelicts of society exhibit animal abuse as a sympton of their condition. And to torture a helpless creature for your personal gain is exactly what you did.
So now that you have your 15 minutes of fame and the attention of people like me, consider this: what if you were in the hospital dying of cancer or another terminal illness, and a doctor tied YOU up in front of the hospital to gain attention for the cause of your illness. How would you feel? Well, let's just say a little less than terrific.
But don't worry, karma is a.... well, you know the rest. Or maybe you don't, but what goes around comes around. I'm sure someday you will be sitting in your deathbed, and I hope that God punishes your with an eternity in hell for your crimes on Earth. And until then, I hope that your government arrests you, siezes your assests, uses them for humane societies and protection of innocent animals, and that you rot in a prison of your country, where your only chance of survival is controlled by another. Maybe then you too can be a piece of "art".

@ paul in the us:
The old MySpace website of the "artist" was deleted, but there was instantly a new one, where he spreads around new fairy tales (statement#5 "it was all a fake and a hoax"):
http://www.myspace.com/gvargas1957

Strangely enough, not in Spanish, but in English, and why? Because the people who understand Spanish have read enough press information about this case, and would not be so dumb to believe him :-)

daniel said...

A couple of things:

First, I've been wondering about this MySpace website at http://www.myspace.com/gvargas1957 and whether it really is authored by Guillermo Vargas. In Guillermo's profile, it is stated that he is 50 years old. If you do a Google Image search on Guillermo Habacuc Vargas, you'll find a picture of him from www.madc.ac.cr, where he appears to be a young man. I also recall reading something about the fact that he was a young artist, although it's now almost impossible to search for it in Google.

Secondly, considering for a moment that Guillermo's MySpace is genuine, there's something worth being noticed.

Under "Blog entries" you'll find a post titled "My story". It presents a possible version of the events, and how it was all intended to be a simulation - it is stated that the dog was even taken to a veterinarian, given antibiotics and a hearty meal, and later released where he had been found (why didn't the Galeria Codice's official press-release referred to any of this).

What bothers me about this version is this:

"So we got a poor dog that really was sick. We tied him up and took a few pictures. We then spread the rumor on the internet. (...)
So what happened? Well what happened was a reaction that was unsurpassable! All of this time multitudes of abortions are performed every year. Both soldiers and civilians are killed on a weekly basis in Iraq. Crimes against children are performed everyday. Who cares right? But you kill one wretched dog and everyone comes against you with a vengeance. You are what you read right?"

It says that the reaction was unsurpassable. Yet, this is being written October 24th. The worldwide internet knowledge of this event started about a week ago. And yet this exhibition took place on August 16th, over two months ago.
Now Guillermo (if it is truly him) says that he started spreading the rumor on the internet to cause a reaction. If this is true, when and where did he started doing this. Why did it took more than two months for the facts to actually leak into the blogosphere.
It doesn't make sense.
As it is, it seems more likely as damage control, an "after the events" explanation to prevent further escalation of the international reaction.

Anyway, I'm still trying to assess if this page is credible.

I created a blog about this case, called "Guillermo Habacuc Vargas", in Portuguese.
It's difficult to track more news about this. If you know something, please post it.
The petition it's getting bigger and bigger!
Guillermo must be put behind bars!

Does anyone have any information on whether any visitors to this exhibition tried to free the dog? I'd be very surprised if someone didn't try.

Si querias saltar a la fama o crear polémica con tu "exposición" quizá lo hayas logrado pero también lograste que tu nombre Guillermo Habacuc Vargas sea sinónimo de asesino, cruel, despiadado y muchísimas palabras más.

Since I read about the exhibition and saw the dog, I have been depressed and being very sad and angry.

The artiest claims that it was a type of protest. There are many other approaches in helping stray dogs, other than displaying a live stray dog and showing people his death. It is a very simple and cold idea, that did put any insightful thoughts to it.
It seems that his decision of the "art work" is very shallow, irrational and would not work to change the situation with the stray dogs.

Showing a dying dog is not art, doesn't require any high skill. If that was a protest, there should have been other ways so that he could reach our hearts and change people's minds.

Like Paul said, the artist took the opportunity for the dog to sip water or find some grass or even garbage to go through. He took the chance for the dog to live one day longer..

The burgler story is noncense. It was unfortunate that someone got bitten, however the burglar did something illegal and they should not be there anyway.

It was a poor decision to do what the artist did, and I don't even consider he is an artist. I will certainly against Vargas to represent Costa Rica in Bienal Centroamericana Honduras 2008.

True or not.... you must be sick to even come up with a idea like this.
Thankfully in Holland, in politics, we have an Animal Rights Party, that fights in parliament for ALL living creatures that can't speak up for themselves. And you can see people waking up. All of a sudden other political parties are becoming aware of the terrible things that are done to the weak and defenceless in our society.
We have somebody calling herself an 'artist' who locked up hamsters for hours on end in plastic balls 'to make the public aware of the appalling way these animals are often kept' and I am happy to say that her 'performance' was forbidden by court order.
They keep there emotions in hand, because when you get to emotional when defending animals other people tend to not take you seriously anymore. Our Animal Rights Party (the Partij voor de Dieren) keeps their emotions in hand and comes up with hard facts and strong arguments. Try to set up an animal rights party in your country. Let people laugh about it if they want. They did in my country, but now they are the fastest growing party in my country.

I will from now on only allow comments, which do NOT contain any "bastard", "motherfucker", "fuck you", "asshole" or similar, also no encouraging to slaughter or torture Vargas (no matter in which language). This blog is not here to form a lynch mob.

i seriously cannot believe this guy. ART?? he couldve easily put all that effort into FIXING the problem, rather than just tying up poor Natividad and WATCH him die..
and that story about honoring the BURGLAR?? are you SERIOUS?! its a good thing he got bitten. im all for human rights and everything, but that burglar was violating them right then and there! a similar thing happened back home in Peru with a rottweiler called Lay Fun that attacked and killed a delinquent. he was going to be put down for protecting his owners, but now he is part of the canine police force :)

The whole issue on what constitutes art is relative in itself, but there needs to be a LINE drawn in this case! He obviously is inconsistent in his reasoning for his "artistic" display, as seen in various explanations. If he is trying to make a statement illustrating the worldwide problem with starving animals having to fend for themselves in the streets, he's definitely NOT helping! By getting his message across in this manner, HOW in the world does he think he's solving the problem...when in reality he just made it worse by starving, yet again, "just" another dog. I see that he's angered thousands of people (including obviously myself), but he has not really solved or contributed to anything positive. If anything, he's just got people ANGRY. He conveyed his "statement" in the most vulger AND primitive way; he definitely was NOT creative in my eyes.

reiskeks said...

The statements with the "protest against starving dogs/hypocrisy/starving people etc" were made AFTER 2 months and AFTER we were having 50000 signs on the petition and protesting animal welfare organizations from all over the world.

It is completely clear after all those months of fraud pages and false statements and harassment of boycott supporters, that he really made this story 100% up.

His first statement was "Nativity/Natividad was a sick dog and would have died ANYWAY". And if nobody would have protested it would have been his LAST comment. He did not wanted to protest against anything in any way (besides, it would be the same inhuman if he would), he just wanted to "shock" and gain popularity through plain, brute inhumanity.

Anonymous said...

Does he call that art?? well then I just hate art. When has people become so inhuman, so cold and indiferent? I don't want to imagine what will "artists" will be displaying in a few more years all in the name of art.

perhaps the artist should read Leo Tolstoy "What is Art". A dying animal is not art - it is life, in its finality.
I do not accept that a predominantly Catholic/Christian country can allow this for a start. Secondly for the artist to interpret such as art is questionable and shows gross insensitivy, total lack of humanity and - the worst - egocentricity.
Help the animal to die without pain - and do something to make this world a better place.
Should the artist succeed in going ahead with this, perhaps he should offer a large financial sum to S.American animal aid charities for the welfare of such. He is profiting from the death of an animal - it works both ways Mr Artist.

So... if this so called "artist" assumes the poor dog will die eventually... why don't he just commit suicide... after all.. he eventually will die! And free us from his stupidness. He stole the chance of living from the poor animal.

Te has cavado tu propia tumba, desgraciado.

maybe you,habacuc vargas,would die somehow ANYWAY....it's what i hope!

from wikipedia:
ART: refers to a diverse range of human activities and artifacts, and may be used to cover all or any of the arts, including music, literature and other forms. It is most often used to refer specifically to the visual arts, including media such as painting, sculpture, and printmaking. However it can also be applied to forms of art that stimulate the other senses, such as music, an auditory art. Aesthetics is the branch of philosophy which considers art.

Traditionally the term art was used to refer to any skill or mastery, a concept which altered during the Romantic period, when art came to be seen as "a special faculty of the human mind to be classified with religion and science".[1] Generally art is a (product of) human activity, made with the intention of stimulating the human senses as well as the human mind; by transmitting emotions and/or ideas. Beyond this description, there is no general agreed-upon definition of art. Art is also able to illustrate abstract thought and its expressions can elicit previously hidden emotions in its audience.

Everyone who saw that dog in the gallery/torture chamber and did nothing is barely a notch above Vargas. People should organize to boycott the gallery and also tourism in whatever country is responsible for prosecution of this case. Start talking boycott and keep it going...

Sad to say, Vargas is probably getting exactly the response he wanted. There will always be sick people, and there are social systems to take care of them, whether by prosecution or medical care or something else. Those responsible for facilitating Vargas's 'exhibit' should be subject to the harshest legal and economic penalties available.

Demand this.. especially if you are close to where it happened.

To this kind of people the best reward is the contempt (not attemption).

A fine example of how many homeless die on the street should be done with Guillermo Vargas Habacuc.

If something like this happens with thousands of people arround, watching and not realising what is happening, there is obviously something in our culture and society which allowed this to be possible. but not only did the people accept his death as inevitable, but they also found it the best exposition. art, from decorative, to symbolical, to original is nowadays regarded as shocking. the one who can produce the most shocking piece of art is the best artist.
is it maybe that people's lives are so dead that they need shock to make them feel a little bit alive?
why did nobody react... that is the biggest question for me.

This act of course is horrendous. And what i consider most horrific of it all (besides the fact that the "artist" was given awards and not punished at all) is the overwhelming response of the visitors of the gallery and the organizers of this event.... they all just ignored the dog´s suffering!! If there is something to be learned from this horrible "installation" is that the human race has to start becoming more aware of it´s own cruelty and to start doing something about it at least at an individual level. If you see a creature suffering even if there are 1,000 people around and it doesn't seem "acceptable" to help it is each individuals responsibility to do something (in this case there was nothing to stop people from giving water or food to the poor dog or to simply take him away) it seems nobody is willing to take responsibility and i think this is a prevailing problem with society today. We all complain of injustice, cruelty, global warming, pollution, crime, insecurity, etc. but who is acting upon it? (and i don´t mean huge socially impacting acts, just small individual changes)
I think this is something to think about.

Animals are not priority in those country, they don't even care about children!
I am from Nicaragua, and I'm sad to say most of the people in my country are ignorants, when it comes on how to treat animals.
I saw so much cruelty against those poor animals. And the worst part is that the persons reactions are quite rude and violent if you try to stop them.
For them animals are nothing.

So what is the solution? they have difficulty controlling their birth rate! Little girls get pregnant at 13 years old.
I don't think they will start caring for animals today, what needs to be done is to educate them at the earliest..... in schools.
To sensitize them..... that will brake the chain, because right now they are doing what older people show them to do and that is treating animals like nothing.

After seeing the pictures and reading the socald "artist" comment I can only say 1 thing. If you did this to make people aware of the stray dogs in your town, you could make another and better statement by taking in the dog in your own house and give it the tender loving care it needed so much. The statement you now made with this is showing the true inner you: a demon. But as they say: what goes around, comes around. So you better watch your back, you never know what the future will hold for you!

This is a disgusting display of judgement. I can't believe torture could be considered "art." This artist and the gallery that chose to cruelly watch it die as a spectacle should be ashamed of themselves, and meet the same fate as Natividad. They are all monsters.

You Mr. "Artist" are part of the problem, not a part of the solution. I, as a TRUE artist, cannot call this art. I call it a sorry excuse for art and cruel. What I do not understand is how someone can look into those dying eyes and let this just happen. This is not raising awareness, it is murder, cruelty to animals, which in the US could be considered a felony. I cannot express in words how disgusted I am and truly saddened by this horrid display. Finally I will ask this, how does a man like that sleep at night?

What is so depressing about this story is not only that one narcissistic and attention-seeking individual conceived this disgusting idea but that he could actually find a venue to carry it out. the Gallery owners and organisers should be ashamed, as should the people who attended this event and did nothing. The guy even won a prize. This is carrying the emperor's new clothes mind set to ridiculous lengths: 'This is awful but it's art so it must be OK and I won't say anything lest I appear unsophisticated' This is not art, it's obscenity.

Infect yourself & then film your slow demise, while you suffer unaided.
This will bring much needed attention to the plight of millions, and I will then be willing to call you an Artist.

Would I need to sponsor him for a visa in order to install him as part of my exhibit "read more about it", the title spelled out in hamburgers and fries artfully outlined in ketchup over a corner where he lies on a cot wasting away? After all, poor people around the globe are starving in a world of plenty and, had he been born in a different neighborhood, he might have died anyway? He thinks it is art. Perhaps I could get a grant or a prize! Wealthy folks can pretend to ignore him while sipping merlot and eating shad roe on toast points and he can just lie there and sigh. No, can't do it - it would be murder and you go to jail for that. Did Dante rhyme a ring for people such as this? I certainly hope so.

Once again the human race proves it's a total disgrace. Is there not already enough suffering of animals and people in the world? Coupled with too much apathy and not enough people to care? This so called artist cannot justify this appalling, senseless and shameful act. This is not art and it's insulting to attempt to pass it off as art.

This is a cruel publicity stunt designed to give the purportrator a level of fame and notoriety.

The act itself is beyond sick yet utterly transparent exposing the individuals total lack of intelligence and desperate hunger for media attention.

You want to draw attention to the plight of dogs in your country well anyone with half a brain and the inclinatin would have plety of ideas the first being give that dog a home. That dog would of been better left to die in the streets rather than living his days out in a sick freak show.

Vargas you deserve to suffer the same fate. You are a truly sad, pathetic and small individual.

You are a pthetic little man and this world would be a better place without your presence.

You had a chance to rescue a dog, do something good for a living animal. Do that is more of an art. Why not try the reverse. Find a dog in need and help it back to health. You'll be recognise for the good you caused and you'll be supported worldwide. Good is better than evil. The dog could of been loved but people observed him suffering unnecessarily. Dieing on the streets could of happened but in some ways natural, but if you have a chance to make a difference, you should do everything in your power to do it. I have a dog and I love her more than life itself. She's my world. It's an amazing feeling to love a dog. TRY IT OUT!

I am an artist. And what happened in this gallery is definitely NOT art. I was shocked when I saw the photos of the dying dog in a gallery full of people.
But lets remember that there were many people complicit in this. The 'artist' could not have done this without the consent of the gallery. And the visitors.
They should all be deeply ashamed.

You can tell the true character of a person by how they treat those weaker and more helpless than themselves. If Mr. Guillermo wants to make a statement to raise awareness of the suffering of animals in the streets, there are better ways to do it than this. Oh wait . . . that already fucking happened.

I do not believe there is such a shortage of creativity that "artists" are resorting to stints like this. There is no excuse for such behavior. If someone wants this kind of expression let it be on themselves on display - not someone or something against or unknown to their own agreement. It is equivalent with child abuse and child pornography.

This is just disturbing. I don't understand how people can act this way. The need to play god... we all know animals will die on the streets. That is part of life, we are born, and then we die. But that doesn't mean we have to hurry it along. Give an animal hope and then watch it die.

If this had been done to a human it would not be called art but rather murder. Is this to say animals are not living creatures? Do they not feel pain like we do?

Where will the psyco's quest fo "art" stop?

Will he find an already abused child, "rescue" them only to tie them up for his prize persuits?

What about an old person, already close to death, would this be considered acceptable to the leaders in Costa Rica, who have effectively commended him and allowed him to continue his sick work?

Besides condemming the artist here, we should also condem those leaders who have "praised" his art.

All of this makes me think that the most appropriate statement for him is "the more I know about people, the more I love my dog"

I am extremely sick and saddened that this is considered art! Animals and people should not be harmed in the making of art! It's just plain disgusting! The worst part of all is he thinks the dog was sick and going to die anyway? So I ask you this Mr. Vargas, if you were sick and dieing would you like to be tied to a wall and starved to death? NO, there is no reason for this poor helpless possibly already sick dog to suffer even more until death. Did you think that you were giving the dog mercy?? No you were making him hurt more. This is just like taking an elderly person who is sick and tieing them up and starving them because they were already dieing. YOU KNOW THAT IS WRONG SO WHY IS THIS ANY DIFFERENT?? I vow here that I will do everything I can to stop this guy from hurting more animals!

Vargas' comment that 'the dog was sick and would have died anyway' is nonsense. I have a rescue dog that was kept in a cage with no food or water and she is now healthy, happy and lives a full life -so what does vargas know about Natividad, is he a vet as well as a psycho? What kind of evil person could possibly do something like this and then be ignorant enough to consider it art, and what kind of respecttable art gallery would allow this? This is not art, this is murder. The people who went to see this on display and did nothing are just as bad and just as responsible for the death of this poor animal. There is no possible excuse that could justify this, men like him are an embarassment to the human race. How can you warp it in your head enough to think that starving an animal helps other starving animals? Even if the animal was going to die anyway, that is nature, it happens, causing the animals death is just murder and no amount of justifying can change that. How would he like to be tied to a wall with no food or water and left for days until he slowly and painfully starved to death while people paid to watch and yet no one would help. Animals are innocent, it's humans that cause pain and suffering everyday. I have signed the petition, as have all of my friends, and I urge everyone else to do the same. I also propose someone to please start a petition against the art gallery that, not only allowed this, but has invited it back. Someone has to stop this monster.

Sad and sick indavidual and those that say it is "Art" are just as bad if not worse for engouraging a missguided and pathetic person.

Oobviously this non "artist" is NOT a talented artist at all and must rely on "shock value" to get his name "out there" because his artwork can't do it for him. The gallery is just as much to blame for allowing it. Apparently, Guillermo and the gallery have to resort to torturing an innocent animal so that people will notice them. If they want to be noticed in a positive way, why doesn't the gallery and Guillermo take the proceeds and open up a shelter for stray dogs and animals??? Start a spay and neutering program to help eliminate stray animals!! That will bring positve attention to the gallery and Guillermo, instead of outrage! Obviously both the gallery and Guillermo Vargus are "STARVED" for attention themselves!

Everyone has pretty much covered my views of this so called "artist" but what about all the other people that attended the art showing???? They should be ashamed and haunted that they did NOTHING but stand there and watch!!!!!!!! I am an active participant with the local Humane Societies in Northern Virginia and a financial contributor to the HSUS. Everyone who was involved and stood by and did nothing will pay when they answer to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!

I wrote to PETA about this, and here's their kind response:

Many stories-sometimes conflicting-have been circulating about these events, and it has been difficult to verify the reports that we've received.
Because the initial exhibit with the dog took place in Nicaragua, which has no cruelty-to-animals laws, Vargas cannot be charged with a crime at this time.

Our investigations department is aware that Vargas will participate in a show in Honduras in November. It has been reported that a Honduran group, the Honduras Association for the Protection of Animals and their Environment (AHPRA), has secured the event organizers' word that the event rules will prohibit animal abuse. PETA's caseworkers are monitoring this situation and will take further action if we get word
that Vargas plans to repeat the exhibit with the dog. People often
commit heinous acts in a bid to gain attention, so it is important to refrain from encouraging them by giving them the attention that they clearly crave. For more thoughts on this issue, please visit http://blog.PETA.org/archives/2008/04/artist_starving.php.

Exactly what happened at the exhibition in Nicaragua last year may be uncertain, but it is clear that millions of homeless animals are at risk of starvation, disease, violence and death in our own communities right now. My name is Troy Way, I live in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. I run a dog rescue, my goal is to save as many dogs from euthanasia, starvation, abuse or neglect as possible. What I dont understand is why people in the art gallery viewing the torture of this dog did nothing? They could have cut the rope that held this dog and left with it, brought it some water, food, anything - but they did nothing. They are just as guilty as the artist. If someone would be willing to pay for my flight to the next art display, I will save the next dog Guillermo Habucuc Vargas tries to kill.

I HOPE IF HUMAN JUSTICE DOESN'T WIN OVER SUCH A DISGUSTING INDIVIDUAL(A SHAME OFHUMAN RACE), THERE IS A GOD SOMEWHERE THAT WILL MAKE HIM PAYING HARD FOR WHAT HE DID.

I ALSO HOPE THAT EVERYBODY THAT KNEW AND DIDNT DO ANYTHING TO STOP THAT SUFFERNG FOR NOTHING WILL ROT IN HELL FOREVER!!!

PLEASE BOYCOTT ALL THE INSTITUTIONSTAT ALLOWED THAT TO HAPPEN

ALL DOGS GO TO HEAVEN, NATIVIDAD HAS GOT A SPECIAL PLACE UP ABOVE.

WHO LOVES ANIMAL, OUR LITTLE SIBLINGS, WILL RESPECT HUMANS BEING EVEN MORE. IT'S TOO SIMPLICISTIC SAYING TERE AREPRIORITIES MORE IMPORTANT THAN THS, HUMAN BEINGS SUFFERING IN TROUBLES ETC. IF AN "INFERIOR" BEING IS RESPECTED SO WOULD BE A "SUPERIOR" ONE.

NEVER FORGET: EVERY LIFE DOESN'T MATTER WHOM DOES IT BELOG TO, IS SACRED.

I think that this is horrible... It makes me cry every time I think about it or see it. If I were there at the gallery I would have taken the dog with me and gotten it the help it needed. For him to deprive him of food and water that he could have gotten being free is horrible. And to just have him tied to that small corner.. no blanket to lay on.. no water.. no food.. this man should be stoned to death in his gallery.. i believe that could be "art" to him. thousands of people get stoned to death everyday.. he should be one to show what happens... animals are such amazing creatures and are way better than humans most of the time... there's no reason why people shouldn't help. And for those people in the gallery... they should be punished for not doing something about this... so next is he going to take starving children and leave them in his gallery tied to the wall? the people that invited him to the Bienal Centroamericana Honduras 2008 should be ashamed.

This initially shocked me until on further thought I realized the artist is in fact reflecting what is the general attitude of the society he lives in towards animals. This incredibly insensitive act of 'art' was not only accepted in the art gallery, the viewers and the government but also won a prize. While I am very upset by this act of the artist I feel the main target here of controversy is the country that allows this act. Because yes, be sure there is neglect and cruelty every where there. This is not to place blame or attack them. They (the government, the society at large), need help to become aware, because only a lack of awareness could allow such happenings to occur. I pray and ask that light and love may go out to this country and all the countries where similar attitudes are held towards animals. To all animals everywhere.

i am just so sad that some one would do this to a living creature and call it art?? paint a picture!! MAKE SOMETHING OUT OF CLAY. MAKE A VIDEO!! BUT PLEASE dont ever do this again.

i think his response that "it will die anyway" is a ridiculous excuse. All people die anyway, death is certain! Does it mean it doesn't matter how we die? For "gods" sake, its a living thing and even if it is dying, it deserves better treatment.

Mahatma Ghandi said "the progress of society can be gauged by how we treat our animals". Obviously this idiot and disgrace of an artist has gone back to his uncivilized state!

Have we come to the point in humanity that we don't know how to help or that we are afraid to help? What is next? God Help Us ALL! Animals are "people to"!And dude you better hope that your not the next one to be done that way.I can not believe that no one threw a can of dog food or just walked over and rescued him. I look at it this way. That is so very close to being like child abuse that it just makes me want to puke!

This is not art in any form shape or fashion. Is is nothing more than pure evil and cruelity. I am all for bringing to light the plight of starving animals, but why put this on public display? Why did this sadistic moron not put the dog on display and feed and properly care for the dog to show the progress of what a little attention can do? Because he was using this as an example to further his own agenda. Which I can see none other than publicity. Which sickens me. Seeing those well dressed people observing this "art display" and doing nothing. The pruveryors of the gallery need to be held accountable. Will his next "art display" be of a raped 4 year old?

Life is already sad enough for most of us and some of the things that can bring the most happiness to us is by helping those less fortunate than ourselves and caring for other lives around us, this person has used this opportunity to gain fame from a despicable act (after all fame is fame no matter how you achieve it) please let the world boycott anything to do with this "artist" he is in the postion that if his fame wanes he can protect himself and not die in the manner he forced another living creature to, and for that he should be eternally grateful, I am thrilled to know that only a tiny proportion of the world is retarded enough to think this art and that to try to say he was highlighting the issue of feral dogs in his homeland!!!!! might he explain what he actually does to fight this?????

Anonymous said...

i think this is disgusting in more ways than one. how would he feel if someone did this to one of his family members a child of his or even him? he should be punished the same as a murderer. thats what he is in my eyes. he murdered that dog by starving it. it doesnt matter if the dog was a stray. maybe this so called artist is a stray. maybe he should be given the same treatment he dished upon this poor animal.

I have read what the 'artist' said - and I think he was just seeking to shock and get publicity - unfortunately it worked -! I would like to see him erased from th net, erased from the world would be good. He has no compassion - he is not human!!

What about the authorities of the "museum"? They are as sick as this man. What if you want to let a baby starve to death just to make some point (and get an award in the process)?? Wouldn't it be a crime?? There are things that just shouldn't been done despite of all the things that "free speech defenders" might say. This is an awful thing and the worst is that anyone wasnt human enough to release that poor being and giving it a more human way to leave this world (that is if we talk about the imminent dog's death)

Anonymous said...

Are there no animal rights or animal cruelty laws in place that can help punish this guy? In many countries he would get many years of prison for this.
Secondly, what's wrong with the people who went to this art exhibition? Didn't anyone try to help the animal? In many european countries activists release animals like mink on mink farms etc, but no one took any action here...only now, when it is already too late. The dog is already dead. It's such a shame and so sad. Unbelievable.

I heard this story and could not believe it was true. Another emailed urban myth to ruin our day.

To find out it was true broke my heart. I know there are wars and children are starving but this just seemed a window on a horrfic voyeristic, apathetic and frightening state. There are many good things in the world to focus on so I try not to be pessimistic.

Dogs, Cats, Children, Cows, etc die of negelct. Its not art and should never be used as symbol. If he tied a child in the corner who had been neglected (or had attacked a burglar or soldier in a god forsaken civil war) he would be prison.

Of course I cannot compare dogs to children. There are priorities.

However I have cried for last hour over this. The fact that nobody stepped in and watched him die made me lose a little faith in humanity. On the street he had a chance, as art it was evidence that evil exists.

I am overwhelmed at how hideously repugnant this cretinous human is. I`m mortifyingly ashamed to belong to the same species as vargas. I`m also staggered that there were onlookers who apparently did NOTHING , are they guilty of the same crime?

This artist forgot which one was supposed to be "starving."

Johnni-ji said...

Who gave him the right to play "God" over whether this poor dog died or not; just to say that it would have, (read might have), does not justify his actions. Yes the dog may have died out in the streets, but it would have died a more dignified death.

I have an idea for an art installation, it's going to be called death of an artist, where they are tied up in a studio and die for the sake of their own art!!!!

This is voyeurism gone nuts!!

This in my opinion isn't art at all. Although what i think would be a good centre piece for the next exhibition would be to chain this artist up in a small room with a meal just out of arms reach for three days with no food or water given to him . . just a fresh meal everyday placed just out of his reach. This of course would be a piece to represent hunger in 3rd world countries. You see i can make up a meaning for doing this too . . but it doesn't make it the right thing to do . . or tasteful, no matter how you look at it, it's just cruelty wrapped up in a nice little pink bow for paying snobs to look at . . . Why doesn't this guy try painting something instead, maybe using some real skills and imagination rather than tying an animal up (Any nasty tallentless fool can do that)

Today I heard about this so called "art" and I got really upset. It's hard to believe that man can be so cruel. There can't be any logic explanation for this kind of behavior.
These dogs that live on the street provides food for themselves one way or another. This form of "art" needs to be stopped immediately!

May this horrendous act be an inspiration to keep on fighting against cruelty to animals. When you become a member of groups like PETA, HSUS, ASPCA, etc., you can find many ways to help animals, and some times you can even help to punish mediocre people like this Vargas, by promoting laws to protect animals and their welfare. As a member of these groups since 2004 I assure you that we have helped a lot of animals in the world, you can help too.

I can not believe how this so called "artist" has not been punished by the police, or anyone. This thing has gotten so much attention, that you'd think that someone would really done something about this.

I can't understand this "artists" mind. How sick, twisted soul he must be. Tie a helpless animal in to a leash and watch it die.

"Picking one out and then leaving it to die in an art gallery is not a reasonable approach!"

I mean, of course, there are lots of stray dogs out there, lots of them starve to death. But if you pick one out and then leave to to die - what's the point of that? If you're going to pick one out, you could've fed it, try to find it a home, or do something that's humane.

I completely judge this approach.

It was not right, no matter how much 'good, fundraising' attention it got.

And the fact that some people actually liked his "art".
That just gives me the creeps.

People, have some love and humanity in you - please.

I just signed the petition. I had never heard of this case until I just recieved a bulletin on my MYSPACE accout. I can't even begin to say how this sickens me. I hope that my meager signiture helps. I pray that this man is stopped, charged with a crime and punished for his wrong doings. There is no excuse for the abuse or torture of any other living thing.

this artist is outrageous-streuth- a dog - OH I"M SO ANNOYED.

how dare he do this.

how dare he use an unempowered creature and do with it what he wants. It's outrageous. I can't believe a human would do this to a dog. I can't believe a human would manipulate a creature unable to speak for it self for his own wants, needs and goals.

I can't believe in a sophisticated developed society, this kind of behaviour is possible.

I can't believe that so many citizens are unaware of what is happening in their own country. I can't beleive that a human would willfully do something that compromises the quality of life of another.

There needs to be more awareness made about people that do this sort of thing to others. It surely can't be allowed to continue. Surely the people will up rise and exclaim NO - enough already.

you're not an artist.
you're a cruel human beign with no heart. if you wanted to make the point of how they starve and die everyday in your town, why not prove that everyone can save a dog if they choose to, instead! you could've took the dog and gave it a healthy environment instead of killing it. i think that's a way better point to make.

This is one of the most sadding art instalations I have ever encountered. I am an Architect and big enthusiast of Art and the Galleries they reside in.

Needless to say this is a completely inhumane way to let a dog die. The fact that you could of nurtured this dog and euthanized it instead of placing it on a wood floor and watching it die and calling it art is outrageous.

What's next we place a human being dieing of cancer on display in a glass cage and watch them die in pain. The dog is no different and therefore Vargas should be brought up on charges end of story!!

I pray that they do not allow this so called "joke" of an artist to do this installation again.

I was really shocked. Usually I am looking for "technical" content only in the web, stumbled on it last Friday, immediately signed the petition, did a bit of scanning on that subject since.

Needless to say that the last bit of innocence was wiped out of my world since.

To me there is no justification for it. There shurely are a lot of fellow creatures out there suffering from starvation, all
kinds of disease, and eventually, die. This a very sad and though there are people out there doing something against it, it happens.

But in the case of that little dog it was STAGED to happen, staged in the name of what calls itself art, but reveals itself as sentational sadism, supported by the organizer, tolerated by public authorities, and accepted by visitors. Thus, this event posseses a quality of evil far beyond ordinary killing.

I have read the threads to kill this man and I have to admit, according to my feelings, it would be no loss to mankind. But I do not approve such kind of views, even if killing him could be, in his own sense, viewed as act of art. But this might make him a matyr, and is not what we need. Moreover, there are more weird people out there doing weird things in the name of art, gain, or ideology whatsoever.

If his deed could be prosecuted, I would give him the sentence to earn his living by the care of abused animals for the rest of his life.
